Occupying Central São Paulo

Area: Culture Urban Development Housing

Type: Research

Medium: Information Visualization Infographic Animation Cartography

Central São Paulo is perpetually under construction. Consecutive cycles of investment and retreat, renewal and decline created a fertile breeding ground for extraordinary occupations to germinate. As a diptych, this visual exploration inquires the nexus of urban (re)development and occupation practices. A first panel unfolds the successive urban reproduction cycles that steered the mutations of São Paulo?s central area over time. The second one reviews 9 peculiar instances in the contemporary urban fabric where occupations appear to perform ?proto-urbanisms?, as utopic and embryonic prototypes of a more inclusive city-in-the-making, yet-to-come, but nonetheless piecemeal ?under-construction?. The panels are accessible through the link below. The first file is a pdf-loop. The second one an interactive presentation.
