Interactive Electrification Planning Map (IEPM) - Nigeria

Area: Planning Urban Development

Type: Research

Medium: Information Visualization

The Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) is a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU). The programme supports the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and other public and private partners to improve access to sustainable energy in the country. In cooperation with the Rainer-Lemoine Institute, NESP is conducting applied research on geo-spatial electrification planning in Nigeria, utilizing advanced modelling tools. The goal is to identify sustainable and economically viable options (e.g. grid, off-grid, solar home systems) for non-electrified urban and rural areas and to advance electrification planning methods. In this context, the exploration and communication of research results and different planning scenarios to all stakeholders is of paramount importance for the further utilization and implementation of the results. The Interactive Electrification Planning Map (IEPM) for Nigeria is an exploratory mapping tool geared towards that purpose. It allows users to interactively explore the current situation of electrification coverage in the country and acts as a strong visual vehicle to effectively disseminate knowledge and create attention among (non-GIS/non-technically oriented) stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to deepen involvement from all stakeholders, i.e. government, NGOs and the private sector. A first interactive prototype of the IEPM tool for Plateau state has recently been developed. It is currently being tested and disseminated both among authorities and electrification experts in Germany and Nigeria. Further development will follow to incorporate feedback and enhance the tool's functionalities (i.e. add filtering, greater geographic coverage).
